UAE Visa Guide: Types, Requirements & Renewal Process

Applying for or renewing a UAE visa can feel confusing if you don't process these applications every day -- but we do. Types of UAE Visas

Employment Visa

Sponsored by a UAE employer, this visa lets you live and work legally in the country. It is typically issued after an entry permit, medical fitness test, and Emirates ID application. Employment visas are usually valid for two or three years and are tied to the sponsoring company -- if you change jobs, a new visa is required under the new employer.

Family Visa (Sponsorship)

UAE residents who meet a minimum salary threshold can sponsor their spouse, children, and in some cases parents. Each dependent needs their own file: passport copies, a marriage or birth certificate attested for use in the UAE, and the sponsor's salary certificate or bank statements. Family visas generally follow the validity of the sponsor's own residence visa.

Visit Visa & Tourist Visa

Short-term visas for people visiting the UAE without the intention to work, ranging from 14 days to 90 days depending on the type. These can usually be arranged quickly, but overstaying carries daily fines, so it is important to track the exact expiry date.

Golden Visa

A long-term residence visa (5 or 10 years) for investors, entrepreneurs, specialized professionals, and outstanding students, among other categories. Unlike standard visas, the Golden Visa does not require a UAE national or company sponsor and offers more flexibility for the holder's dependents.

Investor & Partner Visa

For individuals who hold shares in a UAE company or invest in property above a set value. This visa is linked to the underlying trade license or property title and needs to be renewed alongside it.

Retirement Visa

Available to residents or foreign nationals above a certain age who meet specific financial requirements (property ownership, savings, or income). It offers a renewable long-term stay without requiring employment.

Documents You'll Typically Need

• Original passport, valid for at least 6 months from the application date
• Recent passport-sized photographs on a white background
• Entry permit or current visa status page (for status changes/renewals)
• Sponsor's documents -- trade license and establishment card (employment), or Emirates ID and salary certificate (family sponsorship)
• Attested marriage or birth certificates for family visas
• Medical fitness test results (required for most residence visas, not visit visas)
• Passport-size photo matching UAE government specifications (white background, no glasses, specific dimensions)

Visa Renewal Timelines

Most UAE residence visas should be renewed before expiry to avoid overstay fines, which accumulate daily once a visa lapses. As a general guide:

1. 60-30 days before expiry: ideal window to start the renewal application, especially if a medical test or Emirates ID renewal is also required.
2. Medical fitness test: typically takes 1-2 days for results for most nationalities, longer if additional screening is flagged.
3. Visa stamping: once approvals clear, stamping in the passport is usually completed within a few working days.

Employment and family visas typically renew for the same validity period as the original (2 or 3 years), while Golden Visas renew for their full 5 or 10-year term provided the underlying eligibility (investment, property, or professional category) is still valid.

Visa Cancellation & Status Change

If you are leaving the UAE for good, cancelling your residence visa properly (rather than letting it lapse) avoids future travel bans or fines tied to your Emirates ID and any dependents sponsored under you. If you are changing jobs or sponsors while remaining inside the country, a status change application lets you transition from one visa to another without exiting the UAE, provided your current employer or sponsor cooperates with the cancellation.

Common Mistakes That Delay or Reject Applications

• Passport validity under 6 months -- the single most common reason applications bounce back.
• Mismatched names across passport, marriage certificate, and previous visa records (even a missing middle name can trigger a manual review).
• Unattested foreign certificates -- birth and marriage certificates issued outside the UAE usually need attestation from the home country's foreign ministry, the UAE embassy there, and then the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs before they are accepted.
• Photos that don't meet specification -- wrong background color, glasses, or head covering without the correct exemption documentation.
• Applying too close to expiry, leaving no buffer if a document needs to be corrected or re-submitted.
